Pangani Foundation is helping primary schools across Malawi establish mango nurseries creating fruit, shade, practical learning, horticulture, entrepreneurship and lasting value for generations.
"The best time to plant Mango trees was 20 years ago and the other best time to plant is TODAY".
The mango tree is more than a fruit tree, it is a long-term investment in nutrition, shade, education, the environment, and future generations.
Through the Pangani Foundation, Inc. Malawi Primary Schools & Communities Mango Tree Planting Initiative, participating schools are planting trees that can benefit students and surrounding communities for decades.
A mango tree grown from seed generally begins producing fruit after about 5–8 years, while grafted varieties may begin producing in approximately 3–5 years. As the tree matures, its fruit production can increase significantly.
A healthy mature mango tree can produce hundreds of mangoes during a productive season, although yields vary considerably depending on the variety, age, climate, soil, rainfall, pruning, and overall care.
Most importantly, mango trees are remarkably long-lived. Under favorable conditions, they can survive and continue producing for many decades, with some living 100 years or more.
Why We Plant at Primary Schools:
Imagine a mango tree planted by a primary school student today. Years from now, that same tree could provide fruit and shade to students who were not even born when it was planted.
That is the vision behind our initiative. We are not simply planting mango trees. We are encouraging schools and communities to plant, nurture, learn, and build something sustainable for those who come after us.
“The mango tree we plant today may provide fruit and shade for generations we will never meet. This is more than a tree-planting project. It is a practical investment in learners, schools, communities, and Malawi’s environment.
NUTRITION: Mangoes can add fresh fruit to the school and local communities to encourage healtier eating.
SHADE: Mature trees create cooler, welcoming spaces for learning, meeting, and resting.
PRACTICAL LEARNING: Pupils learn responsibility, agriculture, environmental care and patience through experience.
SUSTAINABILITY: As orchards grow, schools and community can explore ways to support future planting and local needs.
ENTEPRENUERSHIP: Excessive mangoes will be sold which will bring income to families
Our goal is to reach more primary schools in every region of Malawi, one carefully supported nursery at a time.
Here are the stages taken:
EXPRESS INTEREST:: Primary schools Headteacher share this vision with schools staff, schools committe, villlage heads, district education officials and students. When it is approved by all these entities, the school should identify planting area, and a practical budget.
FUNDING: Approved schools receive support for nursery materials, seeds, tools, and locally identified essentials.
MANGO SEEDS: Every pupil and community are encouged not to thrash mango seed after eating the fruit. They should bring the seeds to the school. ready to be planted in the nursery.
NURSERY: Teachers, pupils, committees, and community members should build nursery shelters themselves using local materials. If some materials are to be bought, Pangani Foundation and its supporters will fund the expenses.
PLANTING : When the seedling are reasy to be transplanted, the school committee will choose a day where all community will come to school to get one Mango tree per person. Those who wants more will be asked to voluntality donate money directly to specific schools for the following year planting. Pangani Foundation will still monitor and help as needed for the next five years while establishing same initiate to other schools all over Malawi.
Pangani Foundation promotes community involvement, ownership, security, and responsibility in every project. Communities contribute what they can, while the Foundation and its supporters provide assistance where additional funding or resources are needed.
Together we plant. Together we protect. Together we sustain. 🥭🌱
